Fissure sealants are used to protect vulnerable teeth, particularly those towards the back of the mouth. A resin coating is applied to the biting surface of the tooth to prevent food particles and bacteria becoming trapped and leading to decay. Most commonly used for children’s teeth, fissure sealants can also be used for adults who are particularly concerned about preventing cavities.

Fissures are the naturally occurring grooves on the top surface of molar and pre-molar teeth. It is very easy for tiny food particles to become trapped within them and missed while brushing. Bacteria can then develop and lead to decay and eventually a cavity.
A sealant protects against this happening by coating the tooth surface to form a protective shield, preventing food and bacteria from settling. While very effective, the treatment is also very simple and quick, making it an ideal treatment for children.
The sealant is made from a plastic resin that is ideally suited to protecting the teeth. When hardened it forms a very durable protective layer. The material has the additional benefit of being either clear or white, making it very hard to notice when applied to teeth.
The procedure is quick and painless, without the need for any form of anaesthetic. It usually only requires a few minutes to apply per tooth. Your dentist will clean and prepare the surface enamel before applying the resin-based solution and hardening it under UV light. The result is a long-lasting coating that can protect the tooth for many years.
Fissure sealants are typically applied as the first adult teeth begin to come through. This is usually between the ages of six and seven. The remaining teeth can later be protected as and when they come through, with the full set of adult teeth generally in position between the ages of eleven and fourteen.
