The team at Stoke Lane Dentistry use inlays and onlays to repair and reconstruct teeth that have become damaged by decay or because of accident. Sometimes referred to as partial crowns, they are most commonly used on the molar and pre-molar teeth when the damage is too severe for a filling but not enough to necessitate a complete new crown.

Dental inlays and onlays are a great way to bring back the full functionality, shape and appearance of the affected tooth. They are very strong and long-lasting, while the material used can be coloured to match the existing tooth for a great, natural looking result.
Whether inlays or onlays are required depends on the part of the tooth that needs repairing. Inlays are used when the cavity lies within the cusps in the middle of the top surface. Onlays are used when the damage extends over the top and outside of the cusps.
Dental inlay and onlay restorations are usually made from either porcelain or a composite resin. Your dentist will advise on the material to be used. Both are very durable materials that provide effective and lasting results.
The treatment typically takes two appointments at the practice. An impression of the affected tooth is taken at the first appointment. This is then sent to a laboratory where your bespoke inlay or onlay will be created. The second appointment takes place when the new restoration is ready and can be fitted. Once secured into position using a strong adhesive, the repair is cleaned and polished to leave the final result.
