At Stoke Lane Dentistry, our team always prioritise saving natural teeth wherever possible. When the soft tissue within a tooth becomes infected by bacteria we can use specialist root canal treatment (endodontics) to save it and prevent the need for an extraction. It is a highly effective treatment that can keep the affected tooth functioning perfectly for many years.

Endodontic treatment is usually required as a result of severe decay or fracture. Bacteria can spread into the internal pulp and nerves of the tooth which can be very painful and cause swelling and inflammation. If left untreated the affected tooth will eventually have to be removed.
To prevent this from happening, the soft tissue within the tooth can be gently removed and the internal root canals cleaned and prepared. A special material (called gutta-percha) is then used to fill the canals before they are sealed to protect the tooth from further damage.
Pain, sensitivity to hot or cold, gum tenderness, an unpleasant taste and swelling can all be indications that the pulp of a tooth has become infected. In some cases, however, there are no symptoms at all. If you suspect that you may require root canal treatment you should contact your dentist as soon as possible.
The procedure is performed under anaesthetic and should be relatively comfortable and pain-free. Some sensitivity and tenderness may be experienced after treatment for a few days, though common painkillers can be taken to relieve this. You should contact your dentist immediately if the pain or swelling is more severe.
The treatment has a very high success rate and the result should last for many years. In particularly difficult cases however, where there are complications or the infection is too extensive, treatment may not be possible. Your dentist will carefully examine your teeth from the outset and determine the best course of action.
We aim to ensure our prices are affordable and highly competitive compared to other dentists in Bristol. Prices for root canal treatment vary depending on the individual case and the exact action required, though typically start from £300.00. Please visit our Fees Page for all our latest prices.
